HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
The earliest chemical oxidation projects involved hydrogen peroxide application using “Fenton Chemistry” based approaches, more generically referred to herein as catalyzed hydrogen peroxide (or CHP) approaches, several of which are patented by application firms. CHP approaches involve iron activation potentially requiring pH adjustment. The aim is to produce hydroxyl radicals and depending on the hydrogen peroxide concentration and reaction environment significant heat and oxygen gas production is possible. The radicals, heat, and pressurized oxygen gas may be beneficially applied in treatment but great care is required to ensure worker safety and that infrastructure and building occupants are protected.
Hydrogen peroxide is useful for the following applications:
- An oxidizing agent for both organic and inorganic chemical processing
- A bleach for textiles and pulp
- A treatment for municipal and industrial waste
- Odor control
